CALPINE, California — Sierra County’s Public Works Department has a clear warning for winter travelers: do not rely solely on GPS or internet maps for seasonal road conditions. County officials say digital directions can send drivers onto unmaintained or closed roads in rural terrain, creating serious risks during snow and ice.

The county’s Snow Removal & Road Closures page links to a table of county roads that do not receive snow removal and are generally impassable in winter. Its separate Winter Safety page repeats the advice about the unreliability of electronic routing in isolated areas.

County roads and state highways are different

For Calpine residents traveling through the Sierra Valley, the agency responsible for a route depends on the road. Sierra County Public Works maintains county roads; Caltrans supplies conditions for state highways. If a navigation app suggests an unfamiliar shortcut, first identify the road and check the corresponding official authority rather than assuming the suggested route is passable.

The county directs drivers checking a state highway to the Caltrans road-conditions system. Snow removal and temporary closures can change quickly; an older map or article is not evidence of a current opening.

How to make a safer travel plan

Before leaving: check the county list of roads without regular snow removal; look up state highway advisories; review the latest weather alert; allow an alternative route; and avoid setting out without suitable fuel, clothing, and communications. Winter travel preparations should also account for areas where mobile service is unreliable.

A county notice about seasonal limitations is not an announcement that every local road is closed. Conversely, the lack of a listed closure does not establish that a road is safe for a particular vehicle.

Who answers road-maintenance questions?

Sierra County Road Maintenance says the department is responsible for about 391 miles of county roads and directs questions to Public Works at (530) 289-3201. Drivers who observe roadway damage should identify the location and road authority before reporting.
